Paragon Innovations Offers Gateway for Serial-to-Ethernet Communications

ENET-GATE™ Provides Universal Serial-to-Ethernet Gateway to Web-Enable Any Serial Device

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Sept. 28, 1999 – Paragon Innovations Inc., a leading provider of embedded and Internet systems and design, announced today the availability of ENET-GATE™, a serial-to-Ethernet gateway for universal connectivity of any serial device to networks and the Internet. This connectivity allows communication with – and control of – serial devices from remote locations on a network or through the Internet.

The ENET-GATE, available immediately, uses the NET+ARM™ central processing unit from NETsilicon Inc. The NET+ARM chip is a complete embedded solution containing all hardware and software for enabling Ethernet/Internet connections, which allows the ENET-GATE unit to remain compact. The finished product is no larger than a credit card and is only 1 inch thick.

"The ENET-GATE is a low-cost, compact device that allows any product with a serial port to communicate via TCP/IP over the Internet without having to modify existing hardware or software," said Mike Wilkinson, Paragon's chief executive officer. "It has been designed to be easily customized to work in any environment, with any serial device and in any application."

The ENET-GATE gateway encapsulates serial data with the appropriate TCP/IP information and sends it through a network to its directed destination. Once there, the receiving device passes the information on to the serial port. Optionally, this data can be buffered and transported via a POP3 mail server to any destination.

The ENET-GATE features support for many Internet and network protocols. These include: 10/100BaseT Fast Ethernet, TCP/IP, POP3 and SMTP mail systems and FTP. It also supports both PSOS and VxWorks real-time operating systems. The ENET-GATE supports many different serial interfaces as well, including RS232, RS485 and TTL.

Pricing starts at $499.
